A recommendation that the Second UN scientific conference on the peaceful uses of atomic energy shall open on or about 1 september 1958 and shall last two weeks, has been made by the seven-member committee appointed to advise Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold on atomic affairs. A decision on the site of the conference will be taken later. The Committee made its recommendation at a closed meeting at UN Headquarters last Friday 28 september.

Some 5000 prominent scientists and observers from 67 countries and 9 UN Specialized Agencies are participating in this Conference to pool the latest knowledge on the peaceful uses of atomic energy and to exchange views on scientific problems.Topics of discusssion so far include the potentialities of nuclear fusion as a long-term energy source, experience with nuclear power plants, and experience in health and safety, which was discussed at today's meetings.
