An ad hoc study group by the UN Commission on Human Rights for the purpose of considering a proposal for establishment of regional commissions on human rights within the UN family met for the first time today, elected officers and discussed the organization of its work. Per-Olof V. Forshell (Sweden) and A. A. Mohammed (Nigeria) were unanimously elected as Chairman and Vice-Chairman, respectively, at this morning's meeting. The 11 members of the Ad Hoc Study Group are Chile, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, Nigeria, Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Arab Republic and United States.

The Ad Hoc Working Group to inquire into the present situation of human rights in Chile, established under resolution 8 (XXXI) of the Commission on Human Rights, opened its meetings today, 20 May, for a week's session on organizational matters before its visit to Chile in July. The Group's first meeting was held in private. The Group consists of: Ghulam Ali Allana (Pakistan), Chairman; Leopoldo Benites (Ecuador); Abdoulaye Dieye (Senegal); Felix Ermacora (Austria); and Mrs. Marion J. J. Kamara (Sierra Leone).

The Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was signed today by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Its 30 articles cover measures to be taken by States Parties to eliminate discrimination in various fields including political and public life, the right to nationality, education, employment, health, and marriage, and the family. Rights of rural women are given special attention, as are the elimination of stereotypes and the suppression of prostitution. The text of the convention was, for informational purposes, presented to the 1980 World Conference on the United Nations Decade for Women, held last July in Copenhagen.

Algeria today signed the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The two International Covenants on Human Rights were adopted by the General Assembly on 16 December 1966 in resolution 2200 (XXI). The two Covenants, when they enter into force, will require the states parties to them to implement the rights and freedoms proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
