The UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities was asked this morning to assume responability for outlining a program of action designed to "wipe out the last remnants of discrimination" in the field of political rights. The request was made by Hernan Santa Cruz (Chile), the Sub-Commission's Rapporteur in this field, in introduction his final report on a study of discrimination relating to political rights.

Representing the UN Commission on the Status of Woman is Mrs. Marie-Helene Lefaucheux (right, foreground table) of France. Mrs. Lefaucheux was invited by the Sub-Commission to participate in the Sub-Commission's consideration of questions relating to discrimination on the grounds of sex.

The United Nations Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities today unanimously approved as a whole a set of 15 general principles on freedom and nondiscrimination in the field of political rights. It also adopted a resolution which, among other things, seeks to have governments use the principles for their guidance and continue their efforts "to eliminate all discrimination in the matter of political rights".
Seen here is Mr. Jose D. Ingles (Philippines), Special Rapporteur on the subject: "discrimination in respect of the right of everyone to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country". Mr. Ingles is also the Chairman of the present session of the Sub-Commission on Discrimination.
