Worldwide commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was observed today at the Palais des Nations in a ceremony led by Luigi Cottafavi, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva. The observance marked the twentieth anniversary of the Sharpville Massacre in which unarmmed Africans were murdered while demonstrating against oppressive South African pass laws. Among those attending were representatives of non-governmental and intergovernmenetal organizations, including th eOrganization of African Unity (OAU), and of such liberation movements as the the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) and the African National Congress (ANC).

The ceremony honoured the 22nd anniversary of the brutal massacre at Sharpeville of unarmed Africans demonstrating against the oppressive South African pass laws.

A commemorative meeting was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 21 March in observance of the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The 21 of March was proclaimed International Day for the Elimination of racial Discrimination by the General Assembly in 1966. This year's observance coincides with the 24th anniversary of the massacre of Sharpville.

The meeting was opened by Professor Petr Nedbailo, Chairman of the twenty-third session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, now meeting in Geneva. He recalled that March 21 commemorated the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, when peaceful demonstrations were fired upon and killed by the authorities. The decision to proclaim March 21 as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was made by the General Assembly at its 23rd session.
