The United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which met in Geneva form 17 February to 21 March 1969, concluded its 25th Session today. In observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, 21 March, the Commission met in Special Session in the Assembly Hall at the Palais. A message from UN Secretary-General U Thant, was read by Marc Schreiber, Director Division of Human Rights, and statements were made by Mrs. Qamar Ahmed (India), P.E. Nedbailo (Ukraine), Rita Hauser (USA), Hernen Santa Cruz (Chile) and Joseph Yinza (United Republic of Tanzania).

The Special Committe on the Policies of Apartheid of the Governement of the Republic of South Africa met in special session this morning to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Members of the Commission on Human Rights also attended the meeting. All members of the United Nations has been invited, and representatives of more than 90 States were present, as well as representatives of the specialized agencies and regional organisations. Statements were made by the Secretary-General, U Thant; by the Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights, Princess Ashraf Pahlavi (Iran); by the Chairman of the Committee of the Trustees of the United Nations Trust for Fund for South Africa, Sverker Aström (Sweden); and by the Chairman of the Special Committee on the Policies of Apartheid, Abdulrahim Abby Farah (Somalia). A minute of silence was then observed in tribute to "the victims of apartheid and racial discrimination in these times".

The Commissionon Human Rights held a special meeting today in the Council Chamber of the Palais des Nations at Geneva to take note of the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In 1966, the General Assembly decided to commemorate this day which marks the anniversary of the tragic shootings at Sharpesville in the Republic of South Africa where numerous peaceful demonstrators met their deaths. Along with members of the Commission, others participated in the special meeting. They included Representatives of the Specialised Agencies, non-Governmental Organizations and heads of missions accredited to the Office of the United Nations at Geneva.

Members of the Commission on Human Rights had been invited to attend, as well as the Permanent Representatives of all Member States, and Representatives of the specialised agencies and regional organisations.

The Special Committee against Apartheid held a special solemn meeting this morning in observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. All Permanent Missions had been invited to attend the meeting, along with representatives of non-Member States, the specialized agencies and other organizations in the UN family, and the two Southern African movements - the African National Congress of South Africa (ANC) and the Panafricanist Congress of Azania (PAC). The General-Assembly decided in 1966 to proclaim the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in order to commemorate the incident at Sharpeville, South Africa, on 21 March 1960 in which 69 demonstrators against pass laws under the apartheid system were shot killed and 180 others wounded.

The Internatiobnal Day, 21 March, falls this year on a Sunday. All Permanent Missions had been invited to attend the meeting, along with representatives of non-member States, the specialised agencies and other organizations in the UN family, and two South African liberation movements - the African National Congress of South Africa (ANC) and the Panafricanist Congress of Azania (PAC).

A solemn meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Struggling People of South Africa was held this morning at United Nations Headquarters, marking the first anniversary of the Soweto incident in South Africa. The meeting was sponsored by the Group of African States at the United Nations, and was open to the public. Representatives of Member States had been invited, along with representatives of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the liberation movements. The general Assembly, in resolution 31/6 I, adopted on novemebr 1976, proclaimed 16 June as the International Day and called upon Member States "to commemorate this day in the most fitting way". Medoune Fall (Senegal), the current Chairman of the African Group, presided at this morning's meeting, and spoke on behalf of the African States.

A commemorative meeting was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 21 March in observance of the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The 21 of March was proclaimed International Day for the Elimination of racial Discrimination by the General Assembly in 1966. This year's observance coincides with the 24th anniversary of the massacre of Sharpville.
