The Third Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy began holding a series of technical discussions as it entered its second day. One session described the devices that can be used advantageously for the direct conversion of heat into electricity in the exploration of space, in other remote areas, and for certain other special applications. The Conference, organized by the United Nations in co-operation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is to examine, among other topics, the probable role of nuclear power in respect of the world's future energy needs. Some 76 countries are represented at the Conference and there are about 1800 observers from 30 countries in attendance.

The Ukraine today ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Dicrimination. The Convention was adopted by the General Assembly on 21 December 1965. Under the Convention, States which become Parties condemn" racial discrimination and undertake to pursue, by all appropriate means and without delay, a policy of eliminating racial discrimination in all its forms and promoting understanding among races." The Convention provides for the estbalishment of machinery to oversee the implementation of its provisions.
