Human Rights Day (10 December) was marked by a concert given this evening by the Symphony Orchestra of the Florence Festival (Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino) in the General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters. Here, Assembly President Sir Leslie Munro (2nd from left) and UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold (2nd from right) pose with the two conductors of the Symphony Orchestra, Messrs Francesco Mander (left) and Franco Mannino, both Italian. Mr Mander conducted three works "Suite for Strings" by Corelli, Cesar Frank's "Symphonic Variations", and a "Partita" by the modern Italian composer Giorgio Frederico Ghedini. Mr Mannino, who was a piano soloist for the Cesar Franck number, conducted the final work of the evening, Mendelssohn's "Italian symphony" (Symphony No 4, in A Major, Op. 90).

Sir Leslie Munro (left), President of the UN General Assembly, Lady Munro and UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold exchanging views shortly before this evening's concert in celebration of the ninth anniversary of Human Rights Day (10 December) got under way in the General Assembly Hall.
The concert was given by the Symphony Orchestra of the Florence Festival (Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino) under the direction of Messrs. Francesco Mander and Franco Mannino, both Italian.

A concert given this evening in the General Assembly Hall by the Symphony Orchestra of the Florence Festival (Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino) marked the celebration of the ninth anniversary of Human Rights Day (10 December) at UN Headquarters. The concert was broadcast in the United States by the American Broadcasting Company and Station WNYC, televised by Station WOR-TV and broadcast overseas by shortwave.

Vitetti, wife of Italy's Permanent Representative to the UN; Sir Leslie Munro (New Zealand), President of the UN General Assembly; and Lady Munro; Mr. Franco Mannino, who conducted the orchestra in the final work of the evening and was pinao soloist for Cesar Franck's "Symphonic Variations"; and Ambassador Leonardo Vitteti, Italy's Permanent Representative to the UN.

The United Nations General Assembly, currently holding its 13th session, this morning commemorated the tenth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with statements by the Assembly President, and the present Chairman - as well as former chairmen - of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
This photograph was taken as Mr. Guillaume Georges-Picot (at speaker's rostrum), of France, read a mesage from René Cassin, a former Chairman of the Human Rights Commission. Seated at left on the podium are Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt (U.S.), the first Commission Chairman; and Mr. R.S.S. Gunewardene (Ceylon), the present Chairman. At the presidential rostrum are (left to right): Un Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold; Dr. Charles Malik (Lebanon), Assembly President; and Mr. Andrew W. A special concert was held today in the General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Human Rights. The concert combines performances by the famous Italian singer Renata Tebaldi, and the New York Philarmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein.

Listeners were able to hear the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of its conductor, Paul Paray, perform the Introduction and Procession from "Le Coq d'Or" by Rimsky-Korsakov, and two dances by Maurice Durufle, as well as Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D. Minor. Famed Violinist Jascha Heifetz joined the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.
