The United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which met in Geneva form 17 February to 21 March 1969, concluded its 25th Session today. In observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, 21 March, the Commission met in Special Session in the Assembly Hall at the Palais. A message from UN Secretary-General U Thant, was read by Marc Schreiber, Director Division of Human Rights, and statements were made by Mrs. Qamar Ahmed (India), P.E. Nedbailo (Ukraine), Rita Hauser (USA), Hernen Santa Cruz (Chile) and Joseph Yinza (United Republic of Tanzania).

The Special Committe on the Policies of Apartheid of the Governement of the Republic of South Africa met in special session this morning to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Members of the Commission on Human Rights also attended the meeting. All members of the United Nations has been invited, and representatives of more than 90 States were present, as well as representatives of the specialized agencies and regional organisations. Statements were made by the Secretary-General, U Thant; by the Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights, Princess Ashraf Pahlavi (Iran); by the Chairman of the Committee of the Trustees of the United Nations Trust for Fund for South Africa, Sverker Aström (Sweden); and by the Chairman of the Special Committee on the Policies of Apartheid, Abdulrahim Abby Farah (Somalia). A minute of silence was then observed in tribute to "the victims of apartheid and racial discrimination in these times".

The UN Commission on Human Rigts held a special meeting in the Council Chamber of the Palais des Nations at Geneva to observe the International Day for the Ellimination of Racial Discrimination. In 1967, the General Assembly decided to commemorate this day which marks the anniversary of the tragic shootings at Sharpeville in the republic of South Africa where many peaceful demonstrators met with death. Present at the special meeting, together with the members of the Commission, where Mr. Vittorio Winspeare Guicciardi, Under-Secretary-General and Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, Mr. F. Bradford Morse, Under-Secretary-General for Political and General Assembly Affairs, representatives of the specialized agencies, non-governmental organizations, Heads of Missions accredited to the Office of the UN at Geneva and representatives of the press. Statements were made by Mr. Radha Krishna Rampuhul (Mauritius), Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Mr. F. Bradford Morse, and the Representatives of Bulgaria, Ecuador, India, Senegal and the United Kingdom.

All Permanent Missions had been invited to attend the meeting, along with representatives of non-Member States, the specialized agencies and other organizations in the UN family, and the two Southern African movements - the African National Congress of South Africa (ANC) and the Panafricanist Congress of Azania (PAC). The General-Assembly decided in 1966 to proclaim the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in order to commemorate the incident at Sharpeville, South Africa, on 21 March 1960 in which 69 demonstrators against pass laws under the apartheid system were shot killed and 180 others wounded.

A solemn meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Struggling People of South Africa was held this morning at United Nations Headquarters, marking the first anniversary of the Soweto incident in South Africa. The meeting was sponsored by the Group of African States at the United Nations, and was open to the public. Representatives of Member States had been invited, along with representatives of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the liberation movements. The general Assembly, in resolution 31/6 I, adopted on novemebr 1976, proclaimed 16 June as the International Day and called upon Member States "to commemorate this day in the most fitting way". Medoune Fall (Senegal), the current Chairman of the African Group, presided at this morning's meeting, and spoke on behalf of the African States.
Participants observing a minute of silence in memory of those who had lost their lives in Soweto and other parts of South Africa "in defence of justice, liberty and human dignity".

The Special Committee against Apartheid held a Solemn Meeting on 21 March to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and to launch the Week of Solidarity with peoples Struggling against Racism. Today also marked the twentieth annversary of the Sharpeville massacre, at which, in 1960, 69 demonstrators against the pass laws of the Apartheid system were shot and killed, and 180 others wounded, in Sharpeville, South Africa. The Committee heard statements by Secretary-general Kurt Waldheim and by representatives of African and UN groups including the Chairman of the Committee, B. Akporode Clark (Nigeria).
