Scope and content

The Archives of the International Peace Bureau with its 32 linear meters of records is one of the oldest holdings of the League of Nations Archives. It consists of records of the former Registy of the Bureau covering the years 1891 to 1951.

From 1891 to 1914, Elie Ducommun was acting as Secretary-Gneral of the IPB. He was followed by Henri Golay, who stayed until 1951 in this position. Under their administration, the Registry, a collection of Documents, Books and Brochures and a small Library was set up. Due to this situation, the IPB Archives clearly shows two parts: the papers covering the pre-war period until 1914 and the second part containing all the assembled records covering the period 1914-1951.

In 1994, the League of Nations Archives was able to start a project set up in cooperation with the Swiss authorities in the field of preservation of the League of Nations Archives. The project would concentrate on preservation and indexing measures for the Archives of the International Peace Bureau. A four-year plan was set up. During the first year, physical preservation measures of the entire holding would be concluded by Mr. Rubens Bassotto and Mr. Philip Barras. While the papers were freed from all metal, the individual dossiers were transferred into new non-acid folders and the folders into new boxes. At the same time all photos, postcards and posters were removed from the files and integrated either in the IPB photo and poster collection or in a separate postcard collection.

The original postcards are stored with the Postcard Collection of the League of Nations Archives.
