The United Nations General Assembly, currently holding its 13th session, this morning commemorated the tenth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with statements by the Assembly President, and the present Chairman - as well as former chairmen - of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
This photograph was taken as Dr. Charles Malik (Lebanon), Assembly President, addressed the meeting. Seated on either side of him at the presidential rostrum are UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold (left); and Mr. Andrew W. Cordier, Executive-Assistant to the Secretary-General. In the foreground on the podium, waiting to speak, are (left to right): Mr. R.S.S. Gunewardene (Ceylon), the present Chairman of the Human Rights Commission; Mr. Guillaume Georges-Picot (France), who read a mesage from former Chairman René Cassin; and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt (U.S.), the first Commission Chairman.
