Human Rights Day (10 December) was marked by a concert given this evening by the Symphony Orchestra of the Florence Festival (Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino) in the General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters. Here, Assembly President Sir Leslie Munro (2nd from left) and UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold (2nd from right) pose with the two conductors of the Symphony Orchestra, Messrs Francesco Mander (left) and Franco Mannino, both Italian. Mr Mander conducted three works "Suite for Strings" by Corelli, Cesar Frank's "Symphonic Variations", and a "Partita" by the modern Italian composer Giorgio Frederico Ghedini. Mr Mannino, who was a piano soloist for the Cesar Franck number, conducted the final work of the evening, Mendelssohn's "Italian symphony" (Symphony No 4, in A Major, Op. 90).
