Fonds - UNOG Registry Second Period (1973-2018)

In April 1976, following the transfer of the Communications section and the telecommunications section, the new Communications Service will be reconstituted as the Archives and Records Service, with the remaining Units, namely, the Registry Section, the Archives Section and the Mail Operations Unit. (ST/SGB/Organization Section P (III)/Amend. 2 9 April 1976).

In June 2000, UNOG Director-General, noting the need for a reform of records management procedures, as well as for ensuring continuity between records management and the management of historical archives, transferred all the UNOG archive-related functions to the Library.

This merger produced the Registry, Records and Archives Unit.

From the 1980's to 2003, the registry system could not be maintained, as departments, which used to have their correspondence processed by UNOG Registry, gradually stopped sending correspondence to Registry for integration into the official files. Some series are incomplete and some are just not used anymore.
UNCTAD has had its own Registry since its creation in 1965. OCHA (ex UNDRO, DHA) also has had its own Registry since 1972 when the office was established. UNOG Registry has never processed correspondence of these two departments. Since the late 1990's, non-active records from these two departments have been transferred to Records Retirement Unit. ECE established its own registry at the beginning of 1980's to codify its correspondence. The UNOG Registry was responsible for the filing of the Secretariat's correspondence in the UNOG Registry files even though physically these files remained in the Secretariat. This practise continued until the abolition of ECE Registry in the 1990's. From then onward, each Division has been in charge of its own record archiving.
